Regarding Sullivan Cove

 

This week, I was pleased to receive this letter from the Anne Arundel County Executive, John Leopold.  The letter, addressed to the Secretary of the MDE, Shari Wilson, recommends a hearing on this license before the Board of Public Works.

 

The Olde Severna Park Improvement Association appreciates the concern that our county executive has shown for the environment.  We also thank him for encouraging Secretary Wilson to insure that the greater community is given an opportunity to weigh in on this issue in a public forum.

 

We are hopeful that other members of our local and state government and the entire Anne Arundel County Delegation will write similar letters to the Governor and the Secretary of the MDE.  It only takes a little time and could make an immense difference in our collective fight to save Sullivan Cove from the bridges over tidal wetlands.

 

Remember, this issue is not about private property rights.  It’s about a highly unusual request to build 400’ bridges over public water to reach proposed docks.  The applicants have access to their proposed docks through the community facilities at

Hatton

Memorial

Beach

and by canoe/kayak.  This is the way all other residents of Olde Severna Park access their boats and community docks.

 

Please give this request some thoughtful consideration.  Future generations will thank you too!

Greater Severna Park Council Opposes Bridges/Docks in Sullivan Cove

Greater Severna Park Council Opposes

Docks/Bridges in Sullivan Cove

 

On January 13, 2009, the Greater Severna Park Council voted unanimously to oppose the building of the docks/bridges in Sullivan Cove, Severna Park.  The Council represents all of the neighborhoods and subdivisions in Severna Park and some in Millersville. 

 

For many years, the Greater Severna Park Council has been the voice for the residents with respect to important issues like this.  The delegates to the Council:

 

1. Recognize the damage that will occur to the habitat if licenses are granted to build the bridges/docks through the Sullivan Cove Wetlands.
2. Understand the negative impact that the bridges/docks will have on the quality of water in Round Bay  and the Severn River.  
3. See the impact that the piers and docks will have on the enjoyment of the wetlands for future generations.  
4. Share a concern that safe access for kayaks and canoes to the tidal wetlands will be impeded and possibly blocked by the structures.

 

Please call the Secretary of the MDE, Shari Wilson and Governor Martin O’Malley and ask that this issue be brought to the Board of Public Works for a transparent and public review. 

 

Join with thousands of community voters who are members of the Severn River Association, the Magothy River Association, and the Greater Severna Park Council who oppose granting a wetlands license to build bridges over State tidal wetlands in Sullivan Cove.  They are looking to you for leadership on this critical issue to help save our Chesapeake Bay.

 Governor O’Malley recently spoke of “redoubling our efforts to save the Chesapeake Bay.”  It should start in a small place like Sullivan Cove!
